Accounting Practices within an Industry

In order to learn more about accounting practices within a specific industry, it's first helpful to learn more about how we classify industries in the United States. There are 2 main classification systems in North America:

  1. NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) - is the standard used by Federal statistical agencies in classifying business establishments for the purpose of collecting, analyzing, and publishing statistical data related to the U.S. business economy.
  2. SIC (Standard Industrial Classification system) - used to classify industries in the US from 1937 until 1997. It has mostly been replaced by NAICS, although you may still see SIC codes alongside NAICS codes for a company.

 

After you find a NAICS or SIC code, you can search for articles about accounting practices and limit to only articles related to that industry.

Then scroll down the "Advanced Search" page until you see a field to enter a NAICS/Industry code. Entering a number here will narrow your results to only articles related to this industry:
