Housed on the first floor of Thomas Library are the Special Collections and Archives of Wittenberg University. Wittenberg's Special Collections holds a number of interesting, rare, and priceless pieces of history. There are over 3000 items in the rare book collection. Not only is Wittenberg's own history showcased, but also the history of Springfield, Lutheran history, and various famous persons. The Special Collections have received donations from alumni, community members, and even from their sister university in Wittenberg, Germany. These holdings can be explored through Wittenberg's search engine (Now OPAL) or specific research interests can be directed to Librarian Suzanne Smailes. The request form for holdings is below.

Material Accessibility
The Special Collections are closed to the public, with requests made for in library use only. Materials will be made available as soon as possible, usually by the next business day. Immediate access is not usually possible. Please complete and submit the form below and you will be notified by telephone or email when the material is available for use. Archival and special collection materials must be used in the Thomas Library.
To use rare materials, fill out the form below or pick up a print Retrieval Request form at the Circulation or Reference Desk. Turn in paper forms to a Reference Librarian or at the Circulation Desk. Materials will be retrieved as soon as possible. Suzanne Smailes will contact you when the materials are available for your use. Rare materials must be used in the library. When you are finished with them please return them to the Circulation Desk.
