FIRE Week 2025: MurALL

Documenting the 2025 FIRE Week experience that explored and created public art in Thomas Library

Abigail's Artist Statement

During my time in the MurALL FIRE Week program at Witt, I got to see examples of art in different communities and explore culture in local places I had never been before. Learning about the history, context and stylistic choices of the murals in Springfield, Cincinnati and Yellow Springs helped inform my decisions when creating a mural here at Thomas Library. The opportunity to go out and tour these amazing places and immerse myself was invaluable to me as a studio art major! The sheer variety of the murals we saw was so inspiring to me.

As for my own part of the mural, I decided to have Myers Hall as my focus due to its historical and social significance within the Springfield and Wittenberg community. I was inspired by several murals that show various aspects of their local histories. I chose to depict it at night to reflect a more tranquil, reflective feeling of the campus that simultaneously emphasizes the light of the lanterns included. As a senior, I felt this night scene portrayed an ending of sorts, while the soft light of the lanterns and stars in the night reminds us of “passing light to others” even as the metaphorical sun goes down.
