BEAM

Once you have found and evaluated sources for your research project, the next step is learning how to incorporate these sources into your writing. The BEAM method, developed by Joseph Bizup, provides a practical framework for organizing your sources based on how you plan to use them. BEAM encourages you to focus on the functional role that a source will play within your writing by dividing them into four categories: Background, Exhibit, Analysis, Method. Let’s examine each of these categories in detail.

The BEAM method can help you write more strategically and ensure that each of your sources serves a clear purpose in your project. This method can also help you identify potential gaps in your search if you find your project lacking in any of these categories.
